Zen and the Art of Camper Maintance Part 8-musings

Posted on Oct 3rd, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
We are now stopped for the night-4900km's into our journey. Tomorrow we will be heading home after a short visit with family. The trip was cut a bit short-by about 5 days. Like horses at a riding stable once we realized we had turned around and heading home there was no stopping us. We decided we were vacationed out and the weather was just not cooperating so why not be at home vrs parked in a camper van in the rain...Two days of pretty intensive driving interspersed with a very cold night in a northern Idaho State Park has put us close to the finish line.....I made a list of the top 20 memories of the trip last night-reviewing them puts a smile on my face..... We covered a lot of ground and saw many wonderous things but life on the road has it's shortcomings....I need to get from behind the steering wheel to another vantage point to fully appreciate what we have accomplished...I have a few regrets around missed opportunities to stay a little longer and explore a bit more but for the most part I am very satisfied with the vacation.

This morning the temperature was probably about 40 degrees when we woke up with lots of moisture in the air....we followed our RV rituals for departure from camp sites and started up the van. Being 30 years old and a bit worn out "Big White" complained a bit about the cold weather start up by providing us with a mechanical serenade from his lifters being past their prime and not receiving the life giving engine oil fast enough initially (oil cold and thick) ..lots of tapping noises that probably took 5 minutes of driving to quieten. Our van was a little stiff this morning to say the least but he delivered by providing reliable transportation for nearly 400 miles through a variety of weather conditions including snow and very low hanging clouds in the mountains.

It has been an adventure for sure....brings back memories of driving my Volkswagens through the mountains in the 70's and not sure they were going to make it....but always arriving home with some stories to tell...

More to follow.....

Post Vacation and the Day to Day

Posted on Oct 5th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
I am home again sitting in front of my computer "catching up" with my correspondence and what has been happening in the world. I have a list of "must do" items to tackle including the unpacking of the camper van and the storage of all things camping related. To be honest I am a bit reluctant to take on the task as it will mean the end of the camping season and more importantly my life on the road. Of course life at home is much more "comfortable" and convenient but there is something special about living in compact quarters with the bare essentials that makes one appreciate simplicity and function.

I now need to go back into my garage and "clean up" from my pre-vacation van resurrection. Tools to put away, discarded parts to recycle and all manor of organization needed to bring the area back to a sense of order...enjoyable work for the most part as I like the feeling of creating some order so I can actually function efficiency when "tinkering" on whatever project captures my fancy....

After the van and garage clean up my attention will turn to resurrecting the hot tub. It developed a small leak in early July and was shutdown for the summer. From there I have to reshingle my shed roof, put the garden to bed, rework the compost piles, catch up on paperwork and finishing fixing my Toyota...wow...much to do....

Also a good friend sent me some excellent books on dreaming-the couch will be calling me for some reading and study- a fascinating area for exploration for me as I have been having some very lucid dreams lately-lots of interpretation needed I think...

Zen and the Art of Camper Maintenance Part 9-Sitting in the Van

Posted on Oct 6th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
When I arrived home I sat in the van for a few extra minutes and "honored" his service to us over the past few weeks. "Big White" performed flawlessly and only required a bit of tweaking on occasion to fix a few minor problems. I gave him a 60/40 odd of making the trip without some kind of repair and the performance proved to me I had underestimated the potential reliability.

When I embarked on the assessment of the van's systems I broke things down into 3 categories:

1. Components I knew were in an operational state and would "probably" last the 5000 kms of the trip. For example the water pump had been replaced a few years ago along with the hoses, the transmission had been rebuilt and only had about 30,000 kms on it (I had it serviced before I left) and the compression on the engine was good (125#'s in all the cylinders), the universal joints were tight, the rear end and axles seals were good. We replaced the tires so no worries there. I also knew the engine was considered to be well designed and reliable generally which gave extra points to the assessment.

2. Components needing immediate replacement like the deep cycle battery, master cylinder, rear brakes and brake lines, high tension wires etc. A couple of components fell into the marginal category but I decided to replace them anyway rather than take a chance.

3.  Components that might be marginal but could be replaced while on the road. I took along a couple of spare parts to address this issue but didn't need to use them. I was pleasantly surprised to see the depth of parts available at the parts stores I frequented so I had no reason to believe I wouldn't have the same luck in the U.S. I also saw many trucks and vans of the same vintage on the roads so I knew I figured I was covered. I also found myself scanning auto wrecking yards as I passed by and I saw similar vintage vehicles there too....We also updated our AAA/CAA membership to include RV coverage so if we broke down we could be towed....(the inquiry that was made before we left turned out to be very relevant because we learned our current coverage would not cover the van for towing because eventhough it was just a raised top van it falls into the category of RV-a $12 premium gave us all the coverage we needed)  I had a sense I had the mechanical aptitude to handle a majority of the problems that might crop up because the vehicle is not mechanically complex.....

While I was away we stayed for a few nights at friends. He is a motorcycle enthusiast and had a magazine with an article on a motorcycle road trip that went "south" mechanically (in a big way) for both the riders. One of the comments made in the article was made by a father of some women riders they met while riding who stated he hoped the riders would experience a breakdown so they had something "exciting" to talk about when they got back....I am glad I passed on the excitement....

think the performance matched a much newer vehicle

Power Outage

Posted on Oct 7th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
We experienced a rather severe storm late yesterday afternoon resulting in our power going out for over 12 hours-an unusual circumstance for sure. We lit some candles and used our "headlamps" to read by. External circumstances dictated how our evening would play out....we adapted but called it quits by 9:30 and turned in for the night...

Tingling

Posted on Oct 8th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
Last week for the first time in a number of months I laughed until tears started rolling down my cheeks, The event that that created this wonder state of being happened while I was on vacation and I would consider it to be one of the peak experiences of the whole adventure. Other emotions were also experienced on an intense level. In fact the whole vacation has an essence of extremes that is quite fascinating for me to contemplate in retrospect.

Road trips like the one we just embarked on provide a fair amount of stimulus on a number of levels which increases awareness. In fact at times one is taken out of a comfort zone or provided with a stunning visual experience which heightens one's senses-almost a tingling sensation at times....good stuff...

In Behind

Posted on Oct 9th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
I am presently reading a book on dreams. The book came from a good friend as a gift which I very much appreciate. Last night I lounged on my couch covered by a comforter and read. As the pages turned I began to realize how timely and important this gift was. Some questions have already been answered that I have been pondering for a while and I am only a couple of chapters in. I am deeply moved when this kind of interface happens-the universe provided.....

Travel Blogs

Posted on Oct 10th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
I think it is possible to live vicariously through others by viewing the numerous travel blogs that are posted on the Web. I came across a RV lifestyle blog and spent some time yesterday getting caught up in all the wonderful adventures people are embarking on.... and documenting...

The blogs also provide excellent resource guides for RV equipment and places to see...but what is more interesting to me is the "why" of the adventures? What would motivate someone to "quit" their established way or life and head out on to the road for extended periods of time... particularly with no real agenda or destination in mind? I thought about this mindset yesterday and I think I would have problems being nomadic for extended periods of time-I could probably get my head around 6 to 8 weeks but any longer and I think I might start getting "RV" fever?

Some of the blogs reflect a "quest" for somewhere "new" to settle down for a while. A new location to call home...the circumstances vary.... kids have left home and the job is not as meaningful etc etc. A kind of restlessness that creeps into people's lives. I can relate to this feeling on a number of levels and can see the "appeal" of the quest...

There appears to be a number of people that RV solo-men and women. They embark on adventures with no partner or friend in tow. A romantic notion for sure-alone on the open road-no one to answer to.....my wife suggested that I take a solo road trip sometime. There are certain aspects of that suggestion that appeal to me but at the same time I am not sure I would enjoy the experience-I would probably learn from it but I think it could be a lonely existence (at least at times). It is also good to have someone along to share the adventure with, make decisions, help problem solve and navigate (to name just a few of the functions)

I am sure I will spend sometime this winter living vicariously as I follow people's adventures on the road.

Flexing

Posted on Oct 15th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
I spent some time yesterday contemplating how I would like to spend my time over the next few months. Being a dreamer and planner I ran through a bunch of scenarios for fun, I also threw in for good measure some of the constraints and challenges that I am currently facing. The resulting feeling of internal chaos was intriguing to say the least.

There is an innate quest for adventure coupled with a curiosity around the options/potential that are available. I am also very aware of the potential "next hit" syndrome that seems to be playing out. The next "stimulus" that is needed to provide the proper context for self actualization and more importantly energy (and time) focus.

There is also the issue of "unfinished" business that rattles around demanding my attention. I seem to be having some problems conjuring up enough energy/enthusiasm and "particularly" focus to get those projects "off the books" and into a state of completion.

Jumping Ahead

Posted on Oct 16th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
For about the last 3 years I have been contemplating future possibilities in a big way-running scenarios. Intrinsically I know this is the "mental trap" of anticipation and potentially a waste of energy but I do it anyway. I tell people that it is like assembling a large puzzle-I have some of the pieces but not all of them and I like to try and complete something whole from a path forward perspective.

The question of determining priorities is always present, Day in and day out there are many opportunities to exercise "choice" around priorities-moment to moment choices that could make a difference. I am starting to understand the power of incremental steps towards a goal. Those small actions that add up and get one started down the path.

Also sometimes one must walk away from a current endeavor. "Cut bait" and get out. Not always easy as often there is considerable energy invested? How is one being served comes to the forefront?

I am also conscious of the passing of time and the potential to put something off resulting in a missed opportunity. There is some background noise in this area for me,,,,,,,

Hold On-What's THis?

Posted on Oct 17th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
Yesterday I had coffee with a friend. He had called out of the blue and suggested we share a brew and catch up which was great. He is very self directed by nature and I believe leads his life based on what is good for him personally. He is an interesting role model from the perspective that he is reluctant to compromise and those close to him understand his need to self actualize. He has shared examples from his life that clearly illustrate this quest. After we met I contemplated my own life and how I am doing in the "self actualization" arena? I figure there is a ways to go yet....To illustrate this I was going through some old journals a few days ago and found a "report card" that I had drafted on key areas of my life and how I figured I was doing. The entry is dated 1996 so 13 years have passed. As I went down the list I realized I had not made much progress in a number of areas-this discovery was a bit disturbing and after my coffee yesterday I started to analyze "why"  I was in this state of being!!! Real and imagined constraints perhaps? Not setting appropriate priorities? Holding back when it might not be appropriate to do so? Rejecting opportunities based on a number of factors or even not being aware of the opportunities being offered (huge), too much navel gazing and not enough doing etc etc etc......

The clock is ticking-time to make a move.....

How often do you shift gears in life?

Posted on Oct 22nd, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for October 21, 2009:

Interestingly it doesn't usually happen until I have "painted myself into a corner" and realize instinctually I need to "shift gears" to move on. I sometimes proactively do so and that happens after much deliberation and "fact finding"... Fundamentally I embrace the concept of change and realize the importance of shifting gears when something is no longer working or new horizons beckon.

Music=Energization

Posted on Oct 22nd, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
A few days ago my wife and I sorted through our CD collection-this action was taken from a position of necessity based on the fact we had fundamentally lost track of our collection. Over a couple of months time (since the last sort) CD's had been removed from cases, played and "sometimes" not returned resulting in our cabinet looking disorganized and chaotically messy. It took a couple of hours to sift through everything but one of the wonderful end results was a stack of little played CD's that had been rediscovered. We put the player on "shuffle" and enjoyed the music immensely throughout the day.

Of course certain CD's were are traveling companions which when played brought back all kinds of pleasant memories of road trips past. We also marveled at the wonderful voices of the artists and their interpretations of the music.

The experience was energizing and we made a "pact" that we would make sure music will be playing during the coming winter months....

"The Next Hit" Vacation Wise

Posted on Oct 23rd, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
Just back from vacation I am now searching for the "next hit"-the next place I want to visit.  It looks like I need to be "topped up" again. Given the broad range of travel experiences over the past year I would anticipate my focus would change? Nope-doesn't appear so...........

Yesterday I started to feel a bit discouraged by this "anticipatory" mind set. This concern cascaded into a "what am I doing with the rest of my life" full blown navel gazing extravaganza which really pushed a lot of  internal "buttons" resulting in a fitful night's sleep....

Time to hit the yoga mat.....

Creative Muse

Posted on Oct 24th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
Yesterday while walking my dog Lilly I came to the conclusion I have set up a roadblock (or a series of road blocks) to fully exploring my creativity and to be honest I am not sure why? I realized on my walk that this state of being somewhat creatively stifled is actually impacting my energy levels.

There is an internal sense of urgency that I need to continue to push the envelope and be more open to opportunities in general or at the very least be aware of the opportunities and incrementally explore what they could look like?

There is a huge offering of courses to explore different creative opportunities and biographies etc to read that might offer some insights. I need to start walking down this road and clearing the decks so to speak...

A+B

The couch discussion this morning revolved around enabling creativity-individual expression. Basically doing the work and being open to the stimulus. Illuminating for sure but somewhat unsettling. Some friction experienced and some resistance felt-an interesting internal response.

Getting Lost

Posted on Oct 26th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
Yesterday I experienced a sensation of being lost and I hadn't even left the house. A sense I had taken the wrong path and ended up in the dark part of the forest so to speak! The part of the forest I seldom visit yet I knew existed. As I glanced around the unfamiliar surroundings I realized my predicament and experienced a feeling of anxiety. How did I get here?

A series of rationalizations followed and I felt emotionally taxed. I sat with the feeling for a while-honored it's origin and moved on with my day.

The vegetarian French onion soup was excellent as was the company but I didn't forget the feeling...

Crossword Puzzle Problem Solving

Posted on Oct 27th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
A couple of days ago I saw the DVD "Word Play" a movie about an annual crossword puzzle tournament-the players, background, lead up etc. It was an amusing exploration of a subject I know little about. I personally have no interest in solving crossword puzzles (at least at this point in my life) but an interview during the movie a well know politician provided me with an interesting piece of information that I found valuable.

He says he likes to solve crossword puzzles and he claims to apply the same logic he uses to do so in his day to day problem solving. When solving a complex crossword puzzles he takes the position of breaking the crossword down into more manageable components and solving small pieces of the puzzle first. This provides a foundation for him to move on in the process. When faced with a complex problem or challenge this logic really makes sense to me. By taking small incremental steps the process gets started-verses being mired down in the complexity of the undertaking...and not doing anything....

Centering

Posted on Oct 28th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
Over the past few days I have been cleaning out my garage in preparation for installing a gas fired overhead heater. I came to the conclusion this was the right direction to go in by "centering"  and determining I need the utility of a heated garage to move ahead on my sports car reconstruction. Given winter is so long around here I might as well have somewhere warm to work on my hobby. A good way to spend those cold winter days and evenings......Plus I get to utilize the government tax incentive for home improvement-excellent...

I also have to "center" on some other aspects of my life. What do I need to do to move forward?

The Archives

Posted on Oct 30th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
At the moment I am going through some old storage boxes I took out of my shed to see what I need to keep and what can be "recycled". One box contained receipts and income tax records from the 1980's plus employee performance review forms from my previous employer. Interesting things to sift through but I had to ask myself why I still have them? The reasoning actually escapes me at this time so I spent a few hours shredding the contents. I felt good about doing so in one hand (getting rid of clutter) but I was also a bit saddened that a "record" of my previous life is now gone.

There is more of this work ahead. I have some fantastic collections of my children's art work and school papers. I have heard of people actually scanning and archiving the work electronically. There are some real treasures that I will probably keep in original form that I will need to scrapbook I think. Some I will take pictures of or scan and other pieces will probably need to be disposed of because they are deteriorating plus take up a fair amount of room.

The other area is toys. We have a couple of storage tubs full of the favorites-much cherished toys that we are keeping for sure but there are a number of boxes of less popular toys that need sorting, recycling or disposal.

The de-cluttering continues-slowly with some trepidation......

Halloween Party

Tonite my wife and I are attending a murder mystery party. I have a character to play (a playboy type) -so I will need to work on my costume today ( I have most of it determined). It has been a while since we dressed up in costumes so it might be a fun experience.
