Back at Home

Posted on Jun 4th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
I have just returned from being away from home for a week helping a friend move his family out of province. A new start for them and a change of pace for me. On the way home I stopped over at a friend's to catch up, My friend and I talked into the night-sharing stories and perspectives. Enjoyable and noteworthy for sure...

Smart Cars?

Posted on Jun 5th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
A friend has a high performance European sports car that I rode in a few days ago. A Porsche 930 turbo late 1970's vintage. Apparently not many of these cars still exist so it generates a lot of interest when it is driven. People in the know experience automotive lust as they glance over the sleek lines of the car and when given an opportunity will approach the owner to offer comments or ask questions.(this actually happened to me while I was standing by the car in a parking lot waiting for my friend)  The car is not really "practical" on many levels and my friend is now considering selling it and buying a more "green" alternative.

Out of curiosity we visited a Mercedes dealership and took out a Smart Car for a test drive. The Smart Car is very much a contrast to the Porsche 930 but interestingly it also  seems to generate a lot of interest also from the general public. The car has a certain appeal to people and there appears to be more and more of them being purchased.

The trend in the direction of more fuel efficient commuter cars seems to be gathering momentum....!

The Pills

Posted on Jun 6th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
Today I started a regime to get my digestive system back in balance. I went to see my naturopath and it appears to be my number one health concern at the moment. I understand it  will take about a month or so to get things back on track utilizing the daily ingestion of numerous pills to aid digestion etc. I also found out that I have not been consuming enough water which is causing a build up of lactic acid in my muscles. So a water bottle needs to be beside me throughout the day to encourage me to sip from time to time and keep my fluids above the "add fluid" line...

Distraction

Posted on Jun 6th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
Last night I reviewed and got tangled up emotionally with my project list again and what actions I am taking to address the execution of some of the tasks. I seem to be a bit distracted with respect to the focus on a couple of projects that I know I would enjoy if I only got started. I listened to CBC radio yesterday and "This is Definitely Not the Opera" addressed the issue of distraction as their theme . Some excellent points were raised. Sometimes distraction is not a bad thing as it leads to creative solutions to problems and assists in "boosting" creativity. Gives your mind an opportunity to refocus and bring together other aspects in a quest for a solution. Excellent stuff,,,,,,,Of course the flip side is totally loosing focus by undertaking an unrelated path and the project does not get done....

The Year 2003 Garage Find

Posted on Jun 7th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
In my garage I have a cabinet that up to yesterday had a pile of file boxes on top of it containing misc household items and some old "paperwork" documentation. The boxes "migrated" from the basement to the garage in 2003 to make room in my under the stairs storage area. The reason I know this is In my wisdom I had tagged the boxes with the month and year (June 2003) with a note they need to be sorted.

As I am working out of a single garage I needed to convert the space from a woodworking renovation focus to a mechanical focus so I can start putting my cars back together and actually be able to move around in a well organized workspace and actually find the appropriate tools when needed. I started on the project last month and had made some good progress prior to yesterday. Plus I am looking forward to some "order" as it improves my  productivity and creativity and I need both to finish these projects. The boxes had to go to free up the cabinet space for tubs of Triumph TR3 parts (sitting on the floor of the garage)  that I will need to access in the next few months.

Given this is June 2009 I guess I did not consider the sort to be a priority? as 6 years have passed with no "sorting" action. A quick review of the contents shows the boxes do contain some important items that need to be catalogued and filed but there is also "recyclables" that probably should not have been stored in the first place. My garage cleanup took most of the afternoon so I was not in the mood to sort through the content of the boxes so they got relocated?

The spot they got relocated to (garden shed) to is a temporary repository as I need the space for tool storage so I decided I will set a goal of one box of sorting a day for the next 5 days or so,..this makes the unsavory task of going through the boxes more palatable to me as I can spent 30 minutes or so going through a box then move on to something else rather than go for a sorting marathon and "burn out" by trying to do multiple box sorts in the same day.

I probably have about 20 additional file boxes of "storage" items that have been "parked" for a while. I have a tendency to "box" items when doing house clean ups etc  after I get tired of looking at "clutter" or have to make way for reno projects etc. The boxes seem to get ignored for long periods of time which I guess indicates the contents are not that important?

Let's see how the "box a day" sort goes?

Freedom From Distraction?

Posted on Jun 9th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
I have been focused on the concept of distraction lately. The concept has been rumbling around in my consciousness for a while and reinforced occasionally by "hits" from the universe.. little nudges and lessons coming to the forefront.

One such "hit" was a radio show with information about a programmer who has developed a software program ( for MAC at this point) called "Freedom"  that locks you out of your computer except for specific times that are pre-programmed to allow you access. The intent is to stop users from extra time being spent indiscriminately "surfing" the internet and freeing up time for more "productive" pursuits. When sharing the concept with friends there was a sense of "wow" based on the perception that people are not disciplined enough to "self regulate" their computer access.  Based on what I know I think he might be on to something?

My relationship with computer use/access is sometime problematic for me because I believe I do lapse into non-productive surfing more often than not? My interests are varied and sometimes I loose myself in the pursuit of information and hours pass by without me noticing. Sometimes I leave these extended sessions feeling it has been time well spent-other times I leave feeling depleted and disappointed that I had "wasted" my time.

Right now I am of the mindset that I am distracted at times by my computer and the potential it provides? I need to be mindful of the distraction and the cause and effect relationship that ensues...

Daydreaming of Things Automotive

Posted on Jun 12th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
On Wednesday I finally rescued and hauled my 1959 Triumph TR3 home from the farm equipment filled quonset that has been its' home for the last couple of years. "Marilyn" is now sitting in my driveway under a car cover with assorted body panels piled up in my garage. I have been daydreaming about taking this step for over a year. After numerous failed attempts at organizing and executing the extraction the "stars aligned" and the deed was done...

I now have a piece of automotive history "close by" to bring back to life. The car looks rough right now but fortunately a lot of work has already been completed by others and I just need to come in and finish up what has already started and then reassemble the car. Ideally I would like to have this done by the middle of July. A bit of a stretch for sure but I think potentially realistic if everything goes to plan.

The plan is to make the car a "driver" and keep reconstruction costs to a bare minimum. A full restoration would cost thousands of dollars and I just can't go there right now...nor do I want to...I desire a car I can drive and not worry about if I am parked at Starbucks and somebody opens the door on my paint job.

We'll see how all this goes!!!!!!!!!!

June State of Mind

Posted on Jun 13th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
June (so far) has proven to be a strange month for me emotionally. The best way to describe it (I think) is that I am in a restless and unsettled state! I do not view this condition as being negative per se but I am a little concerned about the intensity of what I am experiencing day to day. There is some family drama unfolding (in varying degrees of intensity) that I am trying to distance myself from but not doing that great a job of doing so. I realize I need to set boundaries on my involvement in the drama of those close to me. Their journey is their journey and I need to be there for them if needed but I also have to detach and assume the role of observer and let things be? Hard to do but necessary.

My agitated state begets some deep reflection of which I have indulged myself from time to time in the last few weeks. A reoccurring theme pops up of which I have some understanding of the background but not sure of why it is a big deal? Obviously it needs to be addressed and in order for me to do so I have to go back and meditate for a while on what the "layers" look like because I have to start peeling them back to see what is underneath?

The Garden

Posted on Jun 14th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
We are going through a dry period weather wise in my part of the world which means more "hands on" watering vrs letting nature take care of things. This morning I woke at 6:00 a.m. and went out and started rotating the sprinkler on 20 minute cycles. A beautiful morning to experience with the birds singing and the quietness in the neighborhood adding another dimension.

The garden is looking good. After a slow start (April and May snowstorms) the garden is catching up and there are a lot of great blooms going on and lots of green everywhere.

Ah the joys of gardening!!!

Dirty Knees and Feet

Posted on Jun 16th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
Today I was playing in the dirt-helping my parents by repairing some damaged lawn at their home. It has been a while since I sowed grass seed and I am hoping for a successful grow..

Overall I have spent a fair amount of time in the garden this season. Due to drought like conditions constant attention to watering has been a focus. Of course water conservation is a high priority and I have been timing the soak times to make sure I am not wasting too much water...

I also realized today I haven't worn socks much in the last month. The thought brings a smile to my face.....

Proactive vrs Reactive Friendships

Posted on Jun 19th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
I think I have touched on this subject in an earlier blog but as it seems to resurface every so often into my consciousness I thought I would re-look at my thoughts on the subject.

I have had a few conservations with friends over the past few months on the subject and there seems to be a consensus brewing that shows we all have friends that seldom if ever initiate contact. Any contact is through a proactive approach by us and not by them. This is not to say the interaction is unsatisfactory when undertaken but it seems a bit one-sided.

How does a friend get you on their radar for a proactive gesture to connect? Interesting question? What happens to me sometimes is I see someone who looks like a friend and that "tips me off" to give them a call or an e-mail. Another aspect is the craving for contact which gets me reviewing my potential contacts and making the overture. Common interests also seem to beget proactive contact. Sometimes I become curious about what is happening in a friend's life and pick up the phone. I did this a few nights ago to catch up with a friend who just moved. Interestingly in retrospect he calls me much more often than I call him!!!

I send out e-mails to friends when I am "signed on" to my computer for something to do. It almost fits under the category of "hobby"? Being semi-retired I may have more time to do this than my friends who are still working so based on the aspect ofmy available time so I am in the position to be more pro-active.

My daughter recently brought home the DVD "He Is Not Really Into You" which I watched early one morning. Hilarious to me based on the premise around the signals people are giving out and whether or not they are genuinely interested in you vrs "brushing you off" by being polite even though they have no intention of any follow up. I think I have some "contacts" that fall into the same category... politeness when I contact them but they aren't really into me thus no activity on their part for a proactive initiation.

Not much more to say on the subject at this time but I believe I have only "scratched the surface" of the subject-maybe I will revisit again later...

One aspect is the  "fitting in" to the friend's schedule. People are busy.

Saturday Night and all is Quiet......

Posted on Jun 20th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
Tonight my wife and I took our dog for her daily walk and soaked in the beautiful spring night. The neighborhood is especially quiet tonight for some reason? Not many people out and about....

Cognitive Surplus

Posted on Jun 24th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
I am keeping an Excel spreadsheet documenting the tasks and hours spent reassembling my Triumph TR3. This activity keeps me focused on the project and offers a daily recap of my progress and commitment to getting the car back together. I have broken the project into phases with the hope as the goals are reached I will celebrate and hopefully be stimulated to keep on going.

An interesting outcome from the practice is I have become more conscious of how I spend my time away from the project. For example if I am watching TV I ask myself if it would be a better use of my time to be outside in the garage turning wrenches than watching another episode of Mantracker. 30 minutes is 30 minutes of progress vrs passively watching TV and not committing the time to the reconstruction. I would be using my energy and talent to pursue my hobby vrs trying to escape reality by watching TV...

I am now walking a fine line between working on the car vrs the assorted "must do's" that surface constantly. What is more important? Riding my bicycle and getting some exercise of spending the hour working on the Triumph? I should probably be riding my bike. To be too obsessed with being in the garage may not enhance my lifestyle and actually turn out to be detrimental? Options/options/options...

Out of Sync

Posted on Jun 25th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
Today I have stumbled a bit project wise and been fairly clumsy generally (not sure why?). I could tell in the early morning this was not a day for doing anything complicated or dangerous. My mind was just "not on task". I tried to do some simple chores and things went wrong so I decided to keep a low profile generally. Sometimes it just pays to walk away from things..

Taking the road of least resistance ( a good thing for me  to do from time to time) I unloaded our 1979 Vanguard Camper Van. It needs a good cleaning and some TLC to get it ready for the season. We didn't use it at all last year (it didn't move out of the driveway) and thus it turned into another "storage" shed. I figured removing the "junk" was an activity with a low probability of going "bad" and was something that needed to be done (and something that would match my low energy levels). The activity was interrupted by the occasional summer rain shower but all in all the day proved to be productive and somewhat satisfying.

I had an incredibly deep sleep in the afternoon. Another indicator I guess of my weakened state. Very peaceful rest with a soft breeze blowing through the open window. Good smells too after the rains.

It will be interesting to see how tomorrow goes?

4:30 a.m.

Posted on Jun 26th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
This morning I awoke at 4:30 a.m. restless and not really ready to get up I made my way to the back door to let my dog out. She seemed to think it was morning and time to get going. It was fairly cool temperature wise at 4:30 a.m. and I experienced the predawn light that was just starting to erupt. Good stuff but not enough stimulation to keep me awake or outside... After a quick run around the garden she finished her business and I let her back in and I went back to my bedroom. My mind was racing and it took a while to get back to sleep...

Last year I jumped on my bicycle and went for a quick ride around the block at 4:00 a.m. Just for fun....it was a beautiful warm summer night-the thought brings a smile to my face..

All is Too Quiet in the Neighborhood

Posted on Jun 26th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
It was a beautiful summer night in the neighborhood so I hit our local bicycle path (around 7:30) for a quick spin. I rode for an hour and only saw 2 other people walking on the path and no one riding....I moved into the neighborhood streets-same story. No dog walking, no strolling, no bike riding-hardly anyone on the streets. In fact in one neighborhood I saw no one for about 5 blocks. I guess TV is winning over being out on a beautiful summer night...???

I will admit when I took my dog for a walk around dinner time there were more people around... mainly in their yards- barbecuing ................

As a society I think we are heavily addicted to our electronics.....

The Chess Like Game of Clutter Management

Posted on Jun 27th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
Two weeks ago a decision was made to "reclaim" my son's abandoned bedroom and turn it back into a room that can actually be slept in. The last time it was used as such was last March when friends and their children arrived for a short visit to attend a wedding. Since then it has become mainly a storage spot for art supplies (lots of canvasses) and assorted file boxes containing the remnants of my corporate life, 2 old TV sets and other assorted misc "stuff" that had no place permanent for storage...some of it relevant-some of it surplus and some of it a rather large "?" mark?

Today I spent about 5 hours moving things about-I have about 12 boxes of stuff to recycle that is going to require other family member input?

I have some measurable success. One closet with "relevant, current, useful things in it and an area that has been cleared that would be suitable for storing relevant items. The process continues...move and countermove...

Summer Rain

Posted on Jun 29th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
I was soaking in the hot tub when the rain started to fall...wonderful experience...I celebrated the drops of moisture so badly needed in my part of the country....now the lightning has started....interesting skies accompanied by the sound of thunder...brings on heartfelt memories to me of my dearly departed bull Mastif Ellie-she was one tough dog but she didn't like the sound of thunder....her trying to find comfort by staying very close to whoever she could find in the house during the storm brings a smile to my face...
