Racing the Storm

Posted on Aug 2nd, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
Yesterday I was out bicycle riding and got caught in a severe summer storm that sneaked up on me and gave me a heightened awareness due to my exposure to the elements-it was very invigorating on a number of levels!!!

The adventure started innocently enough with a spontaneous decision to get on my bike and head out for a late afternoon ride. There were some darker clouds off in the western sky but not threatening in anyway that I could sense. I figured we might get some showers later in the evening-long after I had returned home.

The ride started off strong and I was really enjoying myself. I had committed to a short ride but the conditions were such that I was encouraging myself to go for a longer stint. The sun was shinning and the temperature ideal as the kilometers melted away. I rode over a bridge and noticed many people still floating down the river on rafts and air mattresses even though it was later in the day. An idyllic summer scene for sure.

All of a sudden the wind started to pick up. I was wearing sunglasses and noticed a change in the light-everything took on a strange green tinge. The sunlight was gone..... I looked up in the sky and noticed a lot of dark clouds moving in. In fact it started to feel cooler generally. Then flashes of lightning caught my attention. I was glad I was not floating down the river and very motivated to get away from the water. At this point I decided to head for home-quickly....I left the bicycle path and cut through the downtown core taking short cuts whenever I could. The streets were much more empty than usual probably because people had begun to take shelter. Parents were gathering their kids at the playground I passed and stuffing them into their car seats. The wind was starting to blow from the north at this point-fortunately at my back which really made my peddling easier.... My sun glasses were removed and I was peddling hard-figuring I could beat the storm and get home before the skies opened up! I think I had some adrenaline pumping because I flew up a major hill and didn't feel winded....

I was about 4 blocks from home-stuck at a major intersection waiting to cross when the first drops of rain started to fall. The sky had taken on an ominous tinge and I could feel the energy in the air. The light changed and I peddled like a man possessed through my neighborhood. The houses and parked cars flew by-I made it about a block and the sky opened. Rain I could handle-I was instantly soaked to the bone-still peddling hard nature had another surprise in store for me- hail started to fall. Ice balls from the sky.... Lots of them-pinging off my helmet and stinging my exposed skin. The wind picked up even more hitting me was a wall of water and hail. I had to find shelter fast. I was two blocks from home at this point and decided to head for a back alley and some large trees that I knew existed from taking my dog for a walk. The giant fir trees provided much needed shelter from the hail although I was a bit worried about the lightning that was lighting up the western sky. I stay crouched under the tree for about 5 minutes as the hail pounded the ground.

Then I noticed the hail had stopped so I decided to make a dash for home. The rain was still very intense and the alley was full of puddles as I peddled madly down the alley towards home. Mud and water flew. I was having trouble seeing due to rain hitting my eyes but I was determined to get out of the weather before the next round of hail hit.....the wow factor was playing out for me....what a show nature was giving me...

In a few moments my back gate came into view. I was riding into the wind and just getting pelted as I reached for the latch and swung open the gate and was soon under the protective branches of our apple tree. I propped up my bike on our patio table and dashed for the backdoor. It was locked so I made my way around the house to the front door. Water was flowing down my driveway like crazy as I sloshed through the puddles to the front steps... I swung open the door and stepped inside the house..water dripping everywhere. My wife was very glad to see me as she had become concerned when the storm hit...

A bike ride to be remembered for sure!!!!!!

Bump Bump Bump

Posted on Aug 3rd, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
Last night my wife and I decided (ONCE AGAIN)  to cut off our TV cable service and go back to using the TV to watch "selected" DVD's. The cable came back into our life a few months ago through a special offer from the cable provider but last night "I hit the wall" and decided I just don't want the TV intrusion in my space. My wife is very indifferent to TV as she doesn't get drawn in the same way I do and she is very OK with the plug being pulled.....

I feels good to have made the decision.....now action is required...

Vitality

Posted on Aug 5th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
Yesterday I was contemplating the concept of vitality. I got into this stream of consciousness based on some difficulties I was having  "motivating" myself to get a job done that I was putting off but had to be done...  I kind of cruised through the day in a lackluster state without a lot of enthusiasm.

Of course I understand the concept that my energy levels are going to ebb and flow and not everyday and every moment can be high energy but I started to think that overall I might be settling for a lower energy state and accepting it as "normal". This thread got me contemplating many different aspects of my life and what adds to my vitality and what takes away from it?

To be honest I am not really sure about the conclusions?

Heading Out

Posted on Aug 6th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
I am going away for a few days to visit a good friend. This is a solo road trip-not my preference but a necessity based on everyone's schedule. It has been a few months since I have travelled so it is time to answer to the "call of the road" and get behind the wheel and head out of town.........

My friend has a cabin at a lake that he shares with family and friends. He is a good host and I am looking forward to catching up with him and just kicking back and getting into the vacation way of being....

I find I need a break. This "need" has been creeping up on me for the last few weeks. A time out to get somethings worked out combined with a welcomed change of pace...  Hopefully some answers will bubble to the surface to some questions that have been asking myself lately? I find sometimes I need to be away from all that is familiar (and sometimes distracting) to get to the core of my musings....

Mud on the Tires

Posted on Aug 13th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
Today I unloaded my mountain bike from the back of my truck and noticed the mud caked onto the wheels and frame. The image brought a smile to my face as the memories flashed back around my trip to the lake and the back country riding I did with my friend. There had been recent thunderstorms and puddles every couple of hundred feet so there was some splashing through reddish brown water that kicked up on the bike-great fun....One memorable excursion was down an abandoned logging road. We had 4 X 4 up the road and I decided to ride back while my friend drove. The road was very narrow and there was a beautiful creek that flowed beside it. I set out really enjoying the peacefulness and the green beauty everywhere. I also felt "one" with my bicycle as the kilometers melted away. My friend said he was jealous seeing me ride in-front of him as he was forced to stay behind the wheel....I stayed a couple of hundred yards in front of the vehicle and as such I had concern that I may come upon a bear or cougar on the road. Being on a bike my arrival would be much quieter than a 4X 4. On a rest stop I shared my concern with my friend. He agreed-then laughed and said that he had a vehicle and would make sure he safely delivered my body out of the bush and to the appropriate authorities if the attack took place. Truly a good and loyal friend!! Luckily this was not a scenario that played out!!!!

I felt truly blessed to be able to ride in such beautiful surroundings....

Garbage and More Garbage

Posted on Aug 14th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
I have been thinking more about garbage lately. This awareness has come about based on my numerous trips to the city dump in the last year as I sort through our possessions and those of others (estates) and place things in their final resting places. I have been very careful to recycle where possible to minimize the impacts on the landfill even so the shear volume really mounts up and I am still not finished the process.

Yesterday I took 2 cabinet style TV's to the dump for recycling. One was from the mid 1960's and the other from the late 70's. Both color TV's-both not working. My mother-in-law had them in her basement as a carryover from my father-in-law who believed they could be reutilized for their cabinets. He never materialized the idea and has since passed away so the TV's sat unused. In his honor I gutted the early TV and plan to utilize the cabinet (with some modifications) for my fish tank stand. The current stand is IKEA with a make-shift top and I think the TV cabinet will be an improvement. A few weeks ago I took a bunch of obsolete electronics from my parent's home for recycling-some of it working but of no real value for resale or give away. There are always piles of electronics in the bins when I go-our society sure "loves" electronic stuff....

I had a discussion with a friend last week about the life cycle of what we purchase? We agreed we all need to be more mindful about the initial purchase (for example "do I really need it?") and consider how the item is going to be utilized throughout it's life and how it will be disposed of?

Of course the issue of plastics and chemicals has a much higher profile of late. The length of time for plastics to breakdown and the "chemical soup" that is created in the landfills by my chemicals mixing with yours and the subsequent impact on ground water etc should be a major concern to all of us. We have hazardous goods recycling at our dump but I am sure only a fraction of the bad stuff actually makes it to the drop off point !!!

Of course there is the whole issue of an aging baby boom population and the eventual disposal of unwanted estate items? There is a tsunami wave of garbage to hit our landfills in the next few decades. A bit of a sobering thought.

Friday Night in the Emergency Room....

Posted on Aug 15th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
A tiny spec of metal migrated from somewhere into my right eye yesterday morning. I had been working on my car the evening before drilling out a broken stud (from underneath the car) and the shaving probably lodged in my eyebrow  Potentially a one in a million odds of falling out (12 hours later) just right to get imbedded in the white of my eye with the result of sending me to the ER of our local hospital for an examination and extraction.

I spent the afternoon in some discomfort swilling my eye with saline solution hoping the visit to Emergency could be avoided but the universe had different intention. The situation "shrunk" my world down to discomfort and suffering and total focus on the "irritation" of my eye and my sense of well-being. I lost interest in everything (becoming somewhat pessimistic in the process from which I had to become an observer and detach myself)  but getting the situation resolved so I could go back to being "normal" and getting on with my life. At 7:00 p.m. it became apparent the home remedies were not going to work and it was time to make the trip...my wife drove me over to the hospital and I walked into the ER......

There was a fair number of people in queue but the check in went well and I was "processed" within an hour and back on the street heading home. The extraction went well but I have to go back in 48 hours to make sure there is no residual sources of irritation,

The ER waiting area was full of all kinds of interesting people in different states of suffering (patients and caregivers)....a lot of drama for sure and I was part of it all for a short while.....

TV and the Study of Feng Shui

Posted on Aug 16th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
My wife and I crashed on the couch last night and watched TV. A mindless pursuit at best but very appropriate given we were both running on empty and probably at best 2 out of 10 on the energy level scale. However the evening did provide me with some insights into how I could potentially live if I could get the clutter under control and the Feng Shui energy flowing better in our home.

Our focus was Bollywood night and a 3 episode set of "Bollywood Hero" (a comedy) run back to back. This indulgence was a 3 hour extravaganza of entertainment. The first episode was a re-run that we had already seen so during the show I channel surfed to catch something to distract us while we waited for episode 2 and 3. MTV "Cribs" caught my attention and the show featured Kathy Griffiths (the comedian) home. A 7000 sq ft residence probably located in Los Angeles.

While the camera followed Kathy around her home I noticed how uncluttered it was. Taking into consideration it was 7000 sq ft probably means it had a fair amount of storage space which was actually illustrated by the example of 5 individual shelving units containing her extensive shoe collection that she admitted was "staged" by her assistant to ensure the shoes pointed certain ways. She admitted to being very particular about order and I could see the correlation where ever the cameras pointed. I assumed based on what I saw that the Feng Shui energy would flow well in her space.

Some inspiration from an unlikely source to keep going with the simplification of our living space

Jumping to Attention?

Posted on Aug 17th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
Yesterday I pulled my coveralls and spent some "zone time" as a shade tree mechanic. It was a pleasant experience resulting in some progress being made on my Toyota reassembly and a chance for me to be outside and working with my hands-all good.
But in the evening some doubt started to creep into my world on whether the activity was the "best" way for me to spend my time?

This doubt came about based on a comment from a loved one about other pressing projects that had not been addressed coupled with a "prompt" from a radio program about contemplating each moments activities to ensure an appropriate focus?? While I was working on the car CBC radio was playing in the background and as is always the case Sunday afternoon provided some interesting programming to occupy my imagination. One program in particular caught my attention: Marc Poirier wrote an essay called "Clutter-a Matter of Life and Death" and was interviewed on Tapestry. His discourse was fascinating to me and mirrored much of my contemplation on clutter control.

As mentioned earlier the interview struck a cord from the perspective of making me reflect on how I am spending my time? Generally?

The events of the day have made me "jump to attention" and to pay attention to the moments.....

This and That

Posted on Aug 18th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
Eyes: Yesterday I had to go back to the ER and have my injured eye re-examined. I had been requested to come back in 48 hours and that recommendation turned out to be a good one...the wait was long 2-1/4 hours but worth the wait. it seems there was an additional burr still imbedded so the emergency doctor did another procedure and I removed a very tiny spec of metal that was still causing some irritation. My eye feels better today for sure....

Cars: I have not worked on my Triumph TR3 for 3 weeks and I miss my interaction. Other automotive projects have taken priority but hopefully I will be back "turning wrenches" soon....I have spent my restoration budget for the year but have enough parts to keep me busy for a while....

Time Management: aware of the present moment but not sure about maximization of the moments-working on it....

Yoga: still not engaged-starting to feel the need to get back on the mat. Not sure why I stopped???

Bicycle riding: not doing enough-1000 excuses-some valid-many not....

Friends: see setting priorities and time management...it is the summer and people are busy-still needs some focus....

Drama: subsided somewhat from previous "highs" -background noise diminished-trying to be an observer-trying to be detached....

Authentic Life: verdict is out on how I am doing? Some ingredients missing? I know what some of the aspects are but darned if I can figure out how to move forward? More meditation required???  Interested in collaboration and being with others who authentic to themselves and potentially have the "key".

Clutter: moving forward in the battle to reduce and right size but difficult battle-discouraged some days-inspired others-real roller coaster of an experience-I know instinctively I am on the right path but darned hard to stay on track....

Passion, Obsession and Circumstance

Posted on Aug 19th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
A recent topic of conversation touched on the aspect of obsession as it relates to creative expression. Does one need to be "obsessed" to achieve greatness and achieve one's goals and aspirations? ....A quick review of examples starts to illustrate the connection between obsession and achievement. Of course passion enters into the equation. To be passionate keeps the energy flowing and makes one open to possibility and exploration. Circumstance is the wild card? Sometimes circumstance provides opportunity and the freedoms to express oneself and other times circumstance gets in the way. Does the overcoming of the obstacles deepen the creative expression resulting in more depth and appreciation of the opportunity and the outcome (given the circumstances)?

Right now my lifestyle allows me the "time" to explore possibility but there are some restrictions based on my circumstances? Yesterday I spent some time contemplating the impacts both positive and challenging and how they are impacting my own self expression? It gets tricky because it become easy to "blame" the circumstances verses working through the roadblocks. For me creative self expression grinds to a halt sometimes because I can't get beyond what is holding me back? Depending on the degree of passion and obsession I may continue to hammer away at the roadblocks or I may surrender because it is not worth the fight? Self imposed parameters also play a role. The parameters act as a governor putting the brakes on self expression. It is interesting to challenge the setting of the parameters because often the barriers are not as real as I had imagined but other times they are? I think there needs to be more challenging of my assumptions around creative self expression???

Change in Plans

Posted on Aug 20th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
Last week a decision was made to re-commission our camper van that hasn't been camped in for about 5 years or even started last year. The lure of the open road has called us and we will be heading out for a few weeks of "gypsy time" traveling down the west coast of Oregon camping along the way. My excitement about the trip and the reconditioning project is growing day to day

Component by component I am going through the vehicle determining what needs to be fixed or replaced. So far so good. Today is transmission servicing and an oil change. "Big White" is the name of the vehicle and it has a lot of history with the family so every time I work on it or sit inside a flood of memories come streaming into my consciousness. The van came into our ownership in the early 1990's and like most purchases got used extensively for the first few years then started to drop off as the children grew older and the van wasn't big enough for the 4 of us and our bull mastiff.

Around 1998 I did a bunch of bodywork and got the van repainted. Today I am repainting the raised roof with a special paint from the local RV dealer that should provide a protective layer and make the van look a lot more presentable.

Of course a tool box and some spare parts will be traveling with us as this is a "vintage" van and one must be prepared.

Idling Away

Posted on Aug 21st, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
Yesterday my camper van repair provided some challenges that tested my patience. On the way to the transmission shop the fuel pump housing split causing fuel to escape. Luckily this happened a very short distance from the shop and I was able to get there and parked without incident. $80 later the new fuel pump was installed (I had already purchased it as I expected it needed to be replaced) But unfortunately now the van is not running properly? Not sure what the problem is put my "critical path" has been impacted as I try and figure out the "root cause"? Frustrating to say the least but I have to stay on task and maybe even take it to a repair shop if I get stumped....arghhhhh.....

Simple Pleasure

Posted on Aug 22nd, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
This morning I prepared an omelet (ham, cheese and mushroom)for my wife and I. We sat on the back patio in the sun, ate our breakfast and watched a squirrel munching away on a pine cone. The perfectness of the moment was not lost on me as I gave gratitude for my blessings and the "peacefulness" of my surroundings.

The decision to sit outside was a spontaneous one which opened up a whole new vista of appreciation. I remarked on the importance of enjoying the patio as the cooler weather is fast approaching and dining outside will not be possible.

Tin Can Camping in a Vintage Camper Van

Posted on Aug 22nd, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
The '79 camper project moves on. Yesterday I recoated the roof. A job that needed doing a few years ago but put off as other projects took priority. The "do it myself" approach was fit for purpose and probably saved us $400 or so. The longevity of the van was also improved by stabilizing the UV ray deterioration of the fiberglass roof. The van is starting to shape up as the excitement of our pending vacation builds .

On the way back from a friends yesterday my wife and I talked about my change of heart with respect to fixing the van. The onus to do so was brought on my a number of factors. In the forefront was my desire to either fix or sell the van. To have it sit in a slowly deteriorating state was not acceptable to me. A quick check on the internet showed me how expensive the van would be to replace which also tilted the scale towards repair. Then I stumbled on the "Tin Can" camping page on the internet and saw the amount of interest people have in touring in vintage RV's-I was sold and the project was born.

Today I don't intend to spend too much time working on the van-I have other callings to attend to like lawn maintenance and bicycle riding....I think I have earned a day off...

Diversions and Assorted Spam

Posted on Aug 23rd, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
The topic of being in nature (and the resulting regenerative benefits) came up yesterday during coffee time. The recharge aspect of getting away from the city and the city vibe and out to where the rhythms of nature can be appreciated is presently absent in my world and I am thinking "why don't we do more of the nature thing?" Like other beneficial practices  such as  yoga and meditation ,vigorous exercise three times a week, creative expression, recreational reading, long bicycle rides and a pile of other "regenerative" pursuits making the effort to be in nature has fallen to the wayside due to other "priorities"?

This realization put the concept of "diversions" onto the contemplative table of my consciousness for some re-examination/contemplation. To be honest I am kind of lost as to why the "regenerative" pursuits have become a lower priority and what is acting as a diversion/blocker to keep me away?

My wife indicated to me that I am being too hard on myself and that things are not as "one-sided" as I believe them to be? Conceptually I can understand her point but at the same time there is something amiss in the mix and I feel it on a gut level?

There is background noise and diversion happening and I have to quieten the beast so to speak?

The Decisions/The Decisions

Posted on Aug 24th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
A decision is made or an action taken that leads to a series of events. A ripple so to speak. Sometimes the decisions are well thought out and executed in an assertive way-other times things just continue to roll along even if a decision has not been made and/or deliberate action taken.

It is the latter scenario that is interesting me at the moment. The putting off of a decision based on any number of different reasons including plain neglect and non-action still has a life of it's own. Sometimes it is smart to delay a decision so facts can be gathered or options explored. My experience tells me that I must rely on instinct/intuition to determine if it is OK to delay. If the decision is not being made due to "fear" or apprehension then there can be difficulties. It is often difficult to dig down and find out why this state exists? I think it is easier to see this scenario play out in others than oneself. It is easier to be the observer when other people due not face their "next decision" straight on? The "non-action" route is kind of like building a temporary dam that for the time being can hold back the water but you know sooner or later the reservoir will become too full and the dam won't be able to hold back the water so to speak and the energies will overcome one's non action and "something" will happen-not always positive I might add? Often resulting in a cause and effect ripple that might get one motivated to get/keep going and take action?

Of course there is the whole scenario of not making the most important decision first? The one you know instinctively you should make but instead you choose to make lessor decisions-lower priority decision(s) while skirting what really needs to be done as the number one priority?

I have a few decisions to make today-off I go now to see what happens?

Spontaneous Gestures

Posted on Aug 25th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
Yesterday I volunteered to take a load of discarded (cheap and nasty) kitchen cabinets to the dump for a friend. My friend is in the midst of a major kitchen renovation and the cabinets and ripped up flooring etc were in a huge pile beside his garage and I could see it had been sitting for a while. His eyes lit up as I made the gesture and I could immediately sense his appreciation. It took the two of us about 30 minutes to break apart the cabinets and stack them in the truck.

Another upside of the gesture is I now have some raw materials for my van upgrade so a small percentage of the discarded cabinets will be reused. This brings a smile to my face as we have had some great meals prepared in the very kitchen that will now become part of our van. The recycle circle is alive and well.

Things

Posted on Aug 26th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
Yesterday my son came over for dinner and brought his dog with him for a visit. Elias the dog loves to visit our home. My son says as soon as he recognizes the neighborhood his excitement starts to build and his tail starts wagging and he can't wait to get out of the car as soon as he sees our house. His pleasure is obvious and he pours out the dog love to us all during his visit. He seems to soak up the experience big time. My son is working long hours at the moment so Elias spends more time alone than normal so the visit was a good change of scenery for him.....I enjoyed having him come over...He and I spent some time together last summer while my son was on vacation so we have some history together...a good dog for sure....

The camper van reconditioning marches on. Yesterday was cabinet and shelf day combined with a thorough cleaning of the interior so "BIg White" is starting to look a lot more "presentable" and livable. Lots more work to do today. Late in the afternoon I kind of "hit the wall" so to speak. Not so much a physical tired-more like an emotional low that impacted my enthusiasm and motivation to continue. I stopped work, took and break and later went out and cleaned up my tools and workspace. The act of doing so lifted my spirits but I did not go back to work on the van in the evening. Strange feelings? It will be interesting to see what today brings....

My wife and I went over to a friends last night to watch Planet Earth...wow...good series..

Nature

Posted on Aug 26th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
My home is close to a creek. The city in it's wisdom designated a natural buffer of land that includes bicycle and walking trails that borders the creek. Included are some self guided sign posts that celebrate the local fauna and wildlife. One of the signs indicates that beavers are part of the natural order of things and that the city will not interfere unless there is undue ecological damage done? The beavers have been an ongoing source of amusement for visitors as they built their dam and toiled away at keeping the waters deep enough for their lodge. A bridge was very close and provided an excellent vantage point. This  "natural" adventure went on for a few years without interference from the city until a few weeks ago when we observed the dam had been "modified" with two overflow pipes about 10 ft long. Shortly afterwards we had about 3 inches of rain in a short period of time and the dam was breached by the swollen creek due to it's weakened state. The water dropped dramatically but we thought the beavers would go back to work. They never did. A week later we learned the city had trapped them so our beaver watching days are over. People are upset. I am not sure if the intervention was necessary but we can't go back....

However on my bicycle ride this evening I spotted a fox on the trail behind our local college.....my first sighting within the city limits. Excellent...

Compost Heap and Assorted Garden Tales

Posted on Aug 27th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
Last spring I "sifted" the previous season's compost and placed the lumps into a pile by my compost bin figuring the lumps would break down during the summer. There was also some old soil that I combined into the mix. By coincidence I had some budding potatoes left over from winter storage that I decided to plant in the pile. They have taken off and now I am harvesting baby potatoes and adding nitrogen to the soil at the same time. Baby potatoes fresh out of the garden are a luxurious treat. Our pots are doing great-the flowers are the best we have seen in recent years even after having to survive a hail storm a few weeks ago. The potted tomatoes and cucumbers are also flourishing. In fact the whole garden with the exception of the tomato plants that are not in pots has really produced....very satisfying as the growing season got off to a bit of a late start and then we had to deal with about 3 weeks of no rain....our little spot of heaven is a blessing...

You're not from around here are you?

Posted on Aug 28th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
Yesterday I stumbled on the 'Couch Surfing" site where you can sign up, create a profile and search for someone to stay with "free" while vacationing. There are videos available that talk to people's experiences with this way of traveling. My understanding of the site is you are rated (recommended/praised) by those that stay with you so that other people can get a sense of their own experience if they turned up at your door and stayed for the night...One of the videos featured a fellow that travelled to Tokyo and stayed with a student for 2 nights. Given the cost of hotel rooms there he saved a substantial amount of money by doing so and also experienced some local sites and cuisine through his host. Another video features a women in India who keeps a booking calendar and has quests booked until after Christmas.

I suppose "couch surfing" is similar to staying in a bed and breakfast (which I have done and enjoyed for the most part) for free? Hmmmm...not sure if I would be up for this kind of adventure?

Rosy

Posted on Aug 29th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
Yesterday I turned my automotive attention to my 1996 Ford Ranger named "Rosy". My trusty workhorse needed some TLC to finish fixing a rather large dent in the rear quarter panel. The dent was the result of a hit and run parking lot accident that occurred before I bought the truck which translated into a very reasonable purchase price. The first summer I had the truck a friend and I pushed out the dent but it was pretty rough still and the rear taillight didn't fit properly. The subsequent completion of the repair didn't happen last summer due to my renovation schedule so I figured yesterday was the day to get going. I am pleased with the results so far but much more work is required to get it to a "fit for purpose" completed state.

Voting with my $$$$

Posted on Aug 30th, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
Yesterday I caught a glimpse of a documentary on TV that was focusing in our impacts on the environment based on our buying habits. One segment talked about laundry and dishwasher detergents and some of the downstream impacts the chemicals make on fish habitat and reproduction. One of the points being made was consumers making the decision to move away from "main stream" detergents with phosphates etc to a more environmentally appropriate product and the difference it would make to our water quality if even only 10% of the population did so....

We are creatures of habit which often translates into habitual purchases of products that we have never taken the time to consider what the ingredients are and their "potential" consequential environmental impacts? Recently our household has made a switch to more environmentally appropriate cleaners-for sure more expensive but I think a move in the right direction.

There are some interesting trends related to consumption that I find a bit disconcerting-one being the development of condo projects around golf courses often in areas with limited water supply. Obviously there is a "demand" for this type of property so by purchasing a condo a person is "voting" with their dollars and supporting what might not be the most "appropriate" use of the land or limited water resources? Having enough people with a desire for this property willing to spend $$$ will continue to push the development until a breaking point is reached and the lack of resources puts a cap on further development? It is too bad if we have to get to this point before we collectively take action and curb our consumption?

Letting Go

Posted on Aug 31st, 2009 by IAAM2 : Workingthruit IAAM2
Over the past week or so I have been having extraordinary dreams and altered states of awareness while awake. I am letting all this flow and trying not to be too overly analytical as to the "root cause". My sense is that I need to let go a bit-understandable conceptually but hard to put into practice....
